Many native peoples have belief systems which are different from our own and which are closely tied to their feelings about the natural world. Through the character of Barney, an old Māori man, the story shows how a boy, Pete, comes to understand and experience something of the way Māori people feel about the land and its “spirit”. And when the whole existence of Barney’s forest and his wild “family” is threatened, Pete is determined to save them.
